Walking 180 Miles for Weston Hospicecare at the Mendip Challenge 2026
When a challenge combines breathtaking scenery, personal determination, and the opportunity to support an incredible local charity, it’s hard to say no.
On Sunday 31st May 2026, members of The Ascot Group team laced up their walking boots and took part in the Mendip Challenge 2026, a demanding endurance event that saw participants tackle some of Somerset’s most scenic ā and challenging ā walking routes.
Together, our team of Andrew Scott, Melissa, Ellie, Andy, Jack, Adi, Grace, and Helen completed an incredible collective distance of 180 miles in a single day, all while raising vital funds for Weston Hospicecare.
Taking on the West Mendip Way
The Mendip Challenge is far more than just a walk. Participants follow routes that weave through the stunning West Mendip Way, winding across the rolling Somerset hills and offering spectacular views along the way.
However, while the scenery was certainly rewarding, the challenge itself was anything but easy.
Our team members took on different route lengths, with some completing the demanding 30-mile challenge, others tackling 20 miles, and several taking on the 10-mile route. Regardless of distance, every participant faced steep climbs, uneven terrain, and many hours on their feet.
By the end of the day, the team’s combined achievement of 180 miles reflected not only physical endurance but also a shared commitment to supporting an important local cause.
Supporting Weston Hospicecare
The motivation behind every mile walked was simple: to raise awareness and funds for Weston Hospicecare.
Weston Hospicecare provides compassionate end-of-life care and support for patients and their families across the local community. Their work makes a significant difference to people facing some of life’s most difficult moments.
What many people don’t realise is that Weston Hospicecare receives just 18% of its funding from the NHS. The remaining support comes from the generosity of individuals, businesses, fundraising events and local communities.
This makes fundraising events such as the Mendip Challenge absolutely vital.
While participant entry fees help cover the cost of running the event, it is sponsorship and donations that directly contribute towards the hospice’s essential services and patient care.
A Team Effort with Real Impact
At Ascot Group, we believe in supporting the communities we serve, and the Mendip Challenge provided a fantastic opportunity for colleagues to come together outside the workplace while making a meaningful contribution.
The event wasn’t simply about crossing a finish line. It was about:
- Supporting a charity that provides invaluable care
- Raising awareness of the funding challenges hospices face
- Encouraging teamwork and personal achievement
- Giving back to the local community
Every mile completed represented another step towards helping Weston Hospicecare continue its vital work.
A Word from Our CEO
Reflecting on the experience, Ascot Group CEO Andrew Scott, who took part in the challenge himself, said:
“The Mendip Challenge was a fantastic experience and a real test of endurance. Iām incredibly proud of everyone from Ascot Group who took part and pushed themselves to complete their chosen distance. Most importantly, we were able to support Weston Hospicecare, an organisation that provides extraordinary care and support to local families. Every donation makes a difference, and we’re grateful to everyone who has supported us.”
Looking Back on an Incredible Day
As the team crossed their respective finish lines, there was a genuine sense of accomplishment shared by everyone involved.
From the challenging climbs and long miles to the stunning Somerset landscapes, the day was filled with determination, teamwork and a common purpose. Most importantly, it highlighted the power of community fundraising and the positive impact it can have on local charitable organisations.
The Ascot Group would like to thank everyone who supported our team, whether through sponsorship, encouragement or donations.
Helping Weston Hospicecare Continue Its Vital Work
While the challenge may be over, the need for support continues.
Weston Hospicecare’s care extends far beyond medical support, providing comfort, dignity and compassion to patients and their loved ones during some of life’s most challenging moments. Donations help ensure these vital services remain available to families across our community.
If you would like to support this incredible cause, please consider making a donation. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps Weston Hospicecare continue providing compassionate end-of-life care across our community.
